The Pennyville mixed housing development in Soweto was a joint initiative partnering together the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Housing and the Pennyville Zamimpilo Relocation Pty Ltd. The project is situated opposite the New Canada station and adjacent to New Canada Road. The project borders the Noordgesig Township. And is conveniently situated along a transit route giving tenants easy access to the Johannesburg central business district The project consists mainly of three and four storey walk-ups. Each block consists of +- 40 two-bedroom units with court yards in the middle which serve as a common area for community activities, washing lines and the children’s play area. The total number of housing units is 200. The project was intended to relocate approximately 1600 families from Zamimpilo informal settlement. These relocated families are allocated houses from various housing options namely fully-subsidised RDP housing, JOSHCO affordable rental units, JOSHCO communal units and middle to high-income rental units offered by investors and banks
