The Orlando eKhaya Hostel is situated in the shadow of the decommissioned Orlando Power Station. The refurbishment of this hostel is part of the Orlando eKhaya development, heralded as the largest and most ambitious development project to be undertaken in the history of Soweto. This development is intended to breathe new life into this historic area and turn it in into an attractive destination for investment, business and tourism though developing a mixed density and use environment. This mixed-use environment features a combination of residential, retail, entertainment, business and recreational spaces. It is a shining beacon showcasing real spatial transformation. The development was occupied by male municipal employees who lived in dormitory style for many years until the transformation process became a reality when the family units were built and for the first time in decades the residents were reunited permanently with their families. The development is located to close to all amenities and is equipped with a lovely play area for the children to play. The project entailed Phase 1 – Conversion of Hostel Block A into 102 family units consisting of 24 one-bedroom units and 78 two-bedroom units. Phase 2 – Construction of a new 3 Storey walk up complex. This comprises of 18 blocks of 6 two-bedroom units each, a total of 108 two-bedroom units. The refurbishment of Block B will consist of 61 two-bedroom units. The total number of units is 266
