THE DELIVERY OF AFFORDABLE RENTAL ACCOMMODATION IN RANDBURG IS UNDERWAY
The City of Johannesburg’s social housing entity JOSHCO, is geared up to deliver 630 affordable rental units in the Randburg central business district. The entity has become renowned for delivering homely and aesthetic spaces to the indigent citizens of Joburg, earning between R3 500 and R7 500 a month.
The development located on cnr. Jan Smuts and Selkirk avenues will accommodate more than 2400 low-income residents. The City’s vision is to develop a housing precinct which will include security services, children’s play areas, landscaped garden areas and pedestrian walkways. A portion of the property will yield a mixed-use property development, which will include a taxi rank, Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) facility, a library, licensing department and other affordable housing options. The vision of the Selkirk Avenue development is likened to Brickfields in Newtown, a social housing initiative that provides low-income earners housing opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them. The development is expected to create employment and accredited training opportunities for locals during the construction phase commencing in February 2018.
JOSHCO offers affordable and secure homes rentals for citizens who earn between R3 500 and R7 500 per month. Those in this income bracket do not qualify for RDP homes nor do they qualify for bonds.
JOSHCO has taken over management of several buildings within the city and the buildings were refurbished and transformed into quality rental accommodation suitable for families. JOSHCO is thriving to increase the number of units to 20 000 by 2020.
