About the Project

This project is located within the City Deep Container Depot area south-east of Johannesburg. The redevelopment programme started with a capital investment from the City of Johannesburg. Since then the project received a social housing restructuring grant from the National Government through the Social Housing Foundation and additional funding has been secured from the Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing, the Gauteng Partnership Fund and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA ).

The redevelopment of the hostel to 654 family housing units started in 2005, and to date 380 units have been completed. The construction also included upgrading of public services and infrastructure, landscaping and the provision of community spaces for children and adults. The project provides a range of unit types including bachelor, one, two and three bedrooms apartments. Monthly rentals range from R650.00 to R1945 per month for the largest unit.
