Kliptown Square Flats
About the Project
Kliptown is well known for its historical significance as the place where the Freedom Charter was adopted in 1955. It is regarded as one of the oldest urban settlements in Johannesburg. The recognition of Kliptown’s historical significance, coupled with its status as a major focus for urban regeneration in Soweto, has stimulated public investment in infrastructure and economic development initiatives in the area. Currently, JOSHCO manages a total of 578 family units in Kliptown.
Kliptown is located at the Walter Sisulu Square of dedication, where JOSHCO manages and maintains high quality and affordable rental accommodation for 478 families. Kliptown Square includes bachelor, two- and three-bedroom apartments and lofts. A unique feature of this project is live-and-work units that allow residents to work from home or establish businesses that serve the passing trade. The estate is surrounded by shops, offices, the Freedom Charter museum, a community centre and the taxi rank. JOSHCO took great care to contribute to a sustainable and safe community by providing 24-hour access control and secure parking, children’s play areas, a basketball court, and landscaping that incorporates indigenous trees and grasses. The estate is managed by two live-in housing supervisors who maintain high standards of service delivery in all aspects of property management.
