La Rosabel

This project will yield 43 affordable rental housing units in the same category of accommodation as that provided in the BG Alexander project. The Rosabel building was the first of ten (10) buildings to be identified through the Better Buildings Programme for redevelopment by JOSHCO.

Significantly, the challenges thus far experienced by JOSHCO in the La Rosabel project are typical of those experienced by the City when trying to address unsafe “bad” buildings. The Rosabel building is fully occupied by residents on very low incomes and in order for the construction phase to start, these residents must be relocated into alternative accommodation.

It is for this reason that JOSHCO has recently purchased four large properties in the Johannesburg Inner City. Although the refurbishment of the Rosabel building is six months behind programme due to the length of time it has taken to arrange alternative accommodation, the contractors have been appointed to start with site works and the relocation of residents will commence in the very near future.
