Sol Plaatje
Respect For Human Dignity
About the Project
Not long ago Sol Plaatje, now a formalised township, was an informal housing settlement with squalid living conditions. It lacked a legal power supply, proper sanitation and rubbish removal service and was located far from amenities. The conversion of the former mining hostels in Sol Plaatje, and formalisation of the settlement began in January 2006 when JOSHCO was tasked by the City of Johannesburg to meet the complex and pressing challenges of upgrading and improving living conditions for the Sol Plaatjie residents.
This was achieved by providing infrastructure services, the conversion of mining hostels to family units and building new RDP houses. Sol Plaatje is the only RDP project that was developed by JOSHCO . JOSHCO has developed 2 558 units that will give home ownership to all qualifying beneficiaries.
